OUR 6 BEST SONGS FROM KOOL & THE GANG

With 23 studio albums released over more than 30 years, ups and downs, successes and declines, several music styles explorations, it’s fair to say that Kool & The Gang’s career and longevity is more than impressive. They have so many hits, it is not easy to determine which songs from this iconic band that you can find on our playlist Funky, Groovy, Baby! we love the most. Still, here’s a non-exhaustive selection of the best songs from Kool & The Gang’s discography.

1.

HOLYWOOD SWINGING (WILD AND PEACEFUL, 1973)

Released in 1973, Wild and Peaceful is the commercial breakthrough album of Kool & The Gang with hits like ‘Jungle Boogie’, ‘Funky Stuff” that is featured on Funky, Groovy, Baby! and ‘Holywood Swinging’ which is the band’s first number one R&B single. The song has been sampled multiples times in rap songs, our favorite being Mase’s Feel So Good.

2.

KOOL & THE GANG (KOOL AND THE GANG, 1970)

Kool & The Gang is the first song from the first studio album of the band. If we love classic Kool & The Gang’s songs such as Celebration and Get Down On It, we have to admit having a particular love for the band’s all-instrumental funk album. Sometimes, you don’t need words to make great moving music.

3.

CARIBBEAN FESTIVAL – DISCO VERSION (SPIRIT OF THE BOOGIE, 1975)

We can definitely feel the Caribbean festival vibes on this all-instrumental song from another critically acclaimed album from Kool & The Gang. Jungle Jazz is another song from this album that we love and was sampled in more than 50 songs including Jade’s Don’t Walk Away that you can find on our playlist Back to the 90s.

4.

HANGIN’ OUT (LADIES’NIGHT, 1979)

Ladies’ Night is a turning point in Kool & The Gang’s career. It’s the debut of  James “J.T” Taylor  the band’s lead vocalist from 1979 to 1988, it’s their first Platinum album and first step into a more mainstream sound. The most famous songs from the album are ‘Ladies’ Night’ and ‘Too Hot’, but our favorite track remains ‘Hangin’ Out’.

5.

FUNKY STUFF (WILD AND PEACEFUL, 1973)

Can’t get enough of that funky stuff” the band sang and they’re totally right. We can’t get enough of ‘Funky Stuff” the opening song of album Wild and Peaceful.

6.

SUPER BAND – 7″VERSION (OPEN SESAME, 1976)

Last, but not least, ‘Super Band’ from the band’s eighth studio album Open Sesame is not only a song that make us want to smile, dance and love thanks to its good funky and groovy vibes, but it’s also a great way to define the legendary band that is Kool & The Gang.
